Comparison

Once upon a time, in a big city a beautiful young girl traveled from far away to become a famous model. Crime dramas are a series of fairytales. Both crime dramas and fairytales have the same characters, just in different forms. Fairytales have three main characters: the princess, the prince or hero, and the wicked witch or evil step mother. The characters in crime dramas take on a different form. The princess is transformed into a victim, who could be male, female, young or old. The hero is portrayed as the CSI agents or detectives, and the wicked witch is portrayed as the criminal which the police are searching for. Crime dramas even follow the same story line as fairytales. They have a theatrical beginning, the great search in the middle and the happy ending. In crime dramas the ending is slightly different. Rather than ending with happily ever after, they end with the bad guy behind bars.

Cause & Effect

Every decision that we make is based on a series of influences that have led us to make that decision. The characters in crime dramas are also faced with decisions to make based on the influences that they experience. For instance last night in an episode of ‘CSI: Miami’ a groom and his groomsmen found themselves in some serious trouble because of the choices that they had made the night before. The night before his wedding, Charlie, the groom, went out for a night on the town with his groomsmen. Little did he know that after consuming a large amount of alcohol and a series of bad choices that led to stealing a limo and killing a security guard. Fortunately for Charlie he was caught by his fiancĂ© in the strip club, and his soon to be father-in law kidnapped him, or he could have also been involved in the murder of the security guard. The influence of the alcohol, along with the drugs led to a series of bad choices that almost cost him his soon to be marriage.

Advocacy Blog

To be a successful crime scene investigator you have to have attentiveness. If you don’t pay attention to detail you could miss a potentially important piece of evidence. Crime dramas can inspire a new way of thinking, and interpreting evidence. The characters in the crime dramas think outside of the box when it comes to interpreting evidence. They try to recreate the situation which the victims found themselves in order to try and figure out what happened. They look for clues just about anywhere. They have found evidence in all sorts of places, such as: behind baseboards, under the edge of a step, and of course the obvious places too, like dumpsters and sewage drains. They also use high-tech innovative equipment to process the evidence they collect. The special equipment ensures that the results of processed evidence are accurate. Attentiveness is key to locating evidence on a crime scene. The piece of evidence that could solve the crime might be tiny, and if you are not paying attention you might miss it.

Narrative Blog

Last night they aired a repeat episode of my favorite crime drama, ‘Criminal Minds’. The main characters are criminal profilers for the FBI. This time the team was invited to Texas to assist in a case that was suspected to be a serial killer. This particular serial killer targeted ‘alpha male’ college students that were there for spring break. The killer bound his victims, then raped and smothered them with a plastic bag. The team created a profile for the killer and assumed that since the victims were larger guys that the killer was actually a man and woman team. The woman would seduce the guy, the lure him into the hotel room, tie him to the bed and then the male would take over and rape and kill the victim. However, the team was only partially correct. The killer was a man and woman team, but they were trapped within one person. The killer suffered from split personality that he developed from his childhood abuse.
